Scrum Start Up

Scrum is all about common sense. But if you’ve never experienced Scrum or agile project management, it can feel strange and counter-intuitive.

This workshop uses a simulation to help the team internalize the fundamentals of working with agility: time boxes, delivering increments of software, and using feedback loops to guide improvements.

After a simulated experience of Scrum, the team will plan their first iteration–using actual requirements and planning for real work.

All participants are expected to understand Scrum basics prior to attending this course.

Workshop Overview: This three-day workshops covers the Scrum framework, roles, and meetings. In addition to training in the basics of Scrum, the Team and Product Owner prepare and estimate their initial requirements backlog and plan for their first iteration.

Audience: This workshop is intended for teams who are about to start using Scrum. Participants should include the team, their ScrumMaster, Product Owner and manager.

Prerequisites: Knowledge of Scrum basics–either through reading Agile Project Management with Scrum, Agile Software Development with Scrum or through actual practice.

Workshop Duration: Three days.

Workshop Outline:

Day 1: Scrum overview and simulation to help teams learn the basics of Scrum. This workshop is based on sound principles of adult learning and experiential education. This method allows participants to experience aspects of Scrum rather than just hearing about Scrum. Participants in the workshop will work in iterations, delivering increments and applying feedback loops to build a non-software product.

Day 2: Overview of user stories and estimating using story points. The Product Owner (or surrogate) and team prepare and estimate an initial Product Backlog (requirements). The intent is to create a back log sufficient to fuel one or two sprints.

Day 3: Sprint planning with the team and product owner to establish their first sprint.

Identify a change backlog to address immediate impediments and other needs to create an environment for success.
